What is really checked when you 'Test Connection'

I

Isbister

What sort of information does MS Project 2003 pass when you 'Test Connection'
during setup of Project Server Accounts from the full client?

Is it only testing the connection to the project server on port 80? Is it
testing connection to the SQL or SharePoint server? Is it checking for MS
Authentication on the project server or a Project Server account if you are
connecting that way?

I can access my project server from a MS VPN connection, but not from a
Cisco VPN connection. I'm trying to find out what Project is passing to help
the techs who run these devices figure out what is blocking me.

When attached to the Cisco VPN I get the 'Unexpected server response' block
with the View button telling me I'm not authorized to view this page. I can
use the PWA from this connection, just not the full client.

Thank you for your help.

Martha

This is Project Server's equivelant of PING only

SQL - not tested
User authentication to the project server - not tested
Project Servers URL and availability - tested
IIS authentication (trusted domains etc) - tested

I am assuming you are not testing from a trusted domain to the project
server's hosting IIS

I hope this helps

If there any specifics on this I can help with let me know

Chris,

Are you speaking of the setting in Internet Explorer under Trusted Sites
listed in Tools, Internet Options, then under Security? If yes, it is
already listed. If no, please explain more.

Thank you very much for your help,

Hi

IIS authentication - can you be authenticated at the Internet Information
Services

By trusted domains I was referring to the system checking whether you were
coming from a trusted zone on the network - which is part of the IIS
authentication check

Note: this is one of the most important checks and you will recieve an HTML
page describing why you could not connect if you fail the check.

This is distinct from the trusted sites in you Internet Explorer - This
becomes of interest when you actually attempt to connect - not during the
test connection function.

The test in no way interogates authentication at the Project Server level -
just to be clear

Glad this was of some help ...
