What is red dotted underline?

Okay - the red wavy underline is spelling, and the green wavy
underline is grammar. But what is the red dotted underline? I see
under two names - Mohammed and Sonja. Bur Sonja is underlined only
once where it appears in a sentence, and not when it appears as the
first word in a table. A right-click doesn't bring up anything
different in a context menu.

Is there a web page or Help file that explains what all these
"helpful" markings are supposed to mean??

Ed,
Most probably you are talking about SmartTags. In Tools - AutoCorrect
Options -
Smart Tags tab, you can disable the Smart Tags, remove the check next to
Label text with smart tags.
Or if you just do not want to see them, Tools - Options - View tab - in the
show section uncheck the box Smart tags.

Hi Ed,

Yes, there is a Help page titled "What do the underlines in my document mean?",
and you can also look at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=901125, "Unusual
marks may appear in a Word document".

The dotted underline you described is a "smart tag" -- in this case, a word
recognized as a name. The dots are supposed to be purple, not red, but that
could depend on how your monitor is set up.

The controls for smart tags are on a tab of the Tools > AutoCorrect Options
dialog. If the box at the bottom of that dialog is checked, hovering over a word
that has a dotted underline will display a little square Smart Tag Actions
button so you can do things like send email (if the name is in your Contacts
list).
