What is target frame? How do I determine what part of frame link

I have designed a web page with frames. I made each page an initial page;
however, I don't know how to use my table of contents which is part of t he
frame icons to link and have the link show up in the main part of the frame
page. I saved the framed page as the index.html page. When I click on the
icon and then press insert hyperlink and choose the page I want to show up in
the main page nothing shows up and the table of contents page disappears.

Target frame is the name of the frame you want the link to turn up in.
Before you get too far I will advice you to not use frames.
