What is the best way to paste if you want the smallest file size?

I am using Visio 2003. I have a large amount of pictures and information to
paste and I am wondering how get the smallest file size. i.e. Would it be
best to paste as a Device Independent Bitmap, as a picture, or as a Microsoft
Visio drawing?
Or is there a way to compress the file??

I would take a guess that internally all inserted images are handled
in the same way, i.e. in some internal format.

With the image selected
menu Format -> Picture
and you can change the compression.

The png format tends to generate a quite small file size.

Certainly, PNG is a superb format, but doubt that would make any
difference to how it is stored internally within Visio.
