What is the command line to tell office to start or open a file?

When you install the ShortCut bar, it adds two shortcuts to Open or
Create a file of any Office type. The Create shortcut offers all
templates from all install applications.

What do I call to create those shortcuts without installing the bar? My
searches for the "command line" string turned up only administrative
stuff involving setup and/or installing from servers.

start > run and type
For eg :
excel "C:\Users\user\Desktop\New Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet.xlsx"
(am using vista)

Try this:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\winword" MyDoc.doc

I suggest copy and paste the above command (in run box or cmd prompt) to
see what you get. Replace MyDoc.doc with something relevant like your
actual document.

If you hadn't noticed, those two shortcuts are also added to the upper
portion of the Start Menu by default and can of course be dragged/copied
anywhere.... what version of Office are you speakin' of?

That doesn't work for ANY office document. You have to have one
shortcut for each app. I have that now. The ShortCut bar adds
something better.

What shortcut? There isn't one. Try again.

From your shortcut bar, allthough presumably you are using pre office 2007,
in whch case I'm unsure as to whether it would work.
It works for Office 2007, which doesnt use a shortcut bar, but adds an entry
to your Start Btn

To add, if using Office 2003, there is an option outlined on MS Office 2003
FAQ's site to add the two options to your start menu. You can then drag
these to your desktop (if you want)

Well, that leaves me back where I started -- needing to install the
ShortCut bar. 2002/XP is my Office version.

You install the toolbar, then see if dragging the Open & New to the desktop
creates the desktop shortcut if it does uninstall the tool bar, if it doesnt
youve lost nothing
