What is the PJENAgent.dll authentication mode?

I have Project Server 2003. What type of authentication does the
PJENAgent use to connect to my SMTP server? Is it anonymous?

Where would I change this setting? My company's SMTP server blocks
all anonymous connections. Is there a place where I could enter a
user name and password?

Gary,

Just to make sure I understand...

The SMTP server does not allow anonymous access. Therefore, if there
were some sort of credential (I guess a user name and password) that
the Project Server 2003 application server could pass to the SMTP
server, then everything would be okay, right?

Do you disagree with the theory or with the ability to make the change
on my application server?

Much appreciated,
Andy

Andy:

You can always write your own alerts and reminders code and make it do
anything you want. In every deployment that I've worked on, the resolution
was to enable mail relay on the SMTP server for the IP address of the
Project Server. This is surely do-able and the path of least resistance
unless you're trying to connect to a hosted SMTP service such as what an ISP
might provide its subscribers. If this is the case, then you should seek out
another SMTP target where you have the flexibility to control this from the
SMTP service side.

Thanks Gary! You are correct. Unfortunately, getting the right
people to believe you is the problem! :)

I am one contractor, the SMTP server is run by a different contractor,
and the liaison between us is handled by a third contractor. The
liaison here refused to believe the problem was on the SMTP server,
and assured me that it must be application-specific. So, basically, I
had to prove my innocence before the liaison would contact the SMTP
contractor. I eventually figured out to run telnet (with the proper
email port) on my Project Server application server and our SharePoint
Portal application server (where emails were working correctly). As
expected, the telnet succeeded from SPS, and failed from PS.
