What is the purpose of the question mark (?) in the duration field?

What is the purpose of the question mark (?) in the
duration field? I know it is used to indicate an
estimate. Is that the only purpose - just an indicator?
Does it server any other purpose or control how MS Project
works in any way?

Hi Joe,
You are correct. The question mark just indicates that
it is an estimated duration. You may filter tasks
looking for tasks with estimated duration but other than
that, I don't believe it controls how Project functions.

The question mark is just an indicator which means that you are waiting for
more information about the duration of that task.

You can get rid of the question mark entirely by going to the tools menu /
schedule tab and unchecking the two boxes that control the behavior of
"estimated durations"
