What is the System Cleanup folder used for?

Glenn Graessle

I noticed a folder called System Cleanup at the same level as my Inbox in
Outlook 2007. It has an Inbox folder and a Sent Items folder. The inbox has
several items that look like messages that should have been archived, but my
archive folder is a pst file local to my machine. The System Cleanup folder
appears to be on my company Outlook Server.

I did not create this folder. What created it and what is it for? Can I
archive the messages in it and delete it? Will it come back later if I
deleted it

Outlook does not create such a folder - ask your Exchange Admin about it as
it is a third party issue.

It's a special folder created by Exchange for System cleanup when the admin
set up and enabled a mailbox manager policy on exchange. It will come back
if you delete it (assuming it lets you delete it, it should be a special
folder that is not deletable.)

See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa998071.aspx - or speak to
your administrator.

It's your corporate policy at work. Thanks to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act
companies don't want old records lying about and will automatically delete
Outlook items after a certain amoint of time.
