What is use of SQLServer in MS Project Server Collaboration Environment

What is use of SQLServer in MS Project Server Collaboration Environment? Is there any limitation in the size of the files that project team members upload for each task because we only have MS Project Server2003 + Project 2003+ SQLServer 2000(Standard version)? I am not sure whether the size of SQLServer 2000(Standard version) decides the size of the files that project team members upload for each task. I heard that the size of SQLServer 2000 (Standard version) is only 2GB?
