What should I learn to get "Excel table in Word"-like behavior?

Hello,

I am trying to figure out what I should be using to get the following
behavior in Word (or Power Point)?

When you insert an Excel object in Word, Excel toolbars appear for you to
edit the object.

I want to have this behavior for a custom object: A menu item should insert
a blank object and invoke the custom editor for my custom object. When I am
finished, I will click outside the edit window and all then the toolbars
should revert to normal.

What should I look into to learn implement such functionality? Is an addin a
solution? Should I implement a standalone application first and then figure
out how to get it to talk to Word?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Gla,

What you describe would be an application that can function as an OLE server
that supports in-place editing.

some of it might also be possible with an ActiveX control.
