Umm Mike, did you understand my question? I know that Office hasnever been
part of any MS OS. I didn't say it was. What I need to know is how to
determine which edition of Office was installed on a specific machine.

You should be aware that Office comes in several editions including
Standard, Professional, Small Business among others (depending on Office
version). I know how to check if Office is installed and which version of
Office (97, 2K, XP, 2003). What I don't know is which edition.

Do you know the answer? Does anyone know it? I found how to check using a
Registry key, but I don't want end users checking the Registry.

Have you tried under Add/Remove programs? It is usually specified there.

Yes it is listed under add/install program. It is listed as Microsoft Office
2000. A shortcut was on my deesktop and when I click it nothing happens. I
get onto it by logging on to the MSN page and scrolling down to the list of
specific MS programs or on a newsletter that has it listed.Under programs it
lists start and Microsoft Office comes up but to click on it brings nothing.
The other programs are there like word which I have used. Powerpoint got
stuck.

Since it is required to install Office from a CD, you should still have
that CD. That CD will have printed on it the version of the product.
Use that CD to do a repair install, or just re-install to fix the problems.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

If you want to get totally specific, go to each Office application,
and go to Help>About.
In that window, it lists a version number that tells you to what point
it's been updated, everything. Take a look at what it corresponds to
on Microsoft's Knowledge Base on the Net.

Add/Remove Programs will only give you the initial version number -
it's all about how much detail you want.

Good luck,

My version of Microsoft Office is 2000 Premium. I tried on add/remove to
repair/reinstall as I finally found CD. It said it was installed, but when I
click on office I get nothing on Start Page or shortcut. The other ones such
as word, excel, powerpoint and etc. are coming up when I click.A friend said
maybe it wasn't installed properly. I would like to update to Office 2003,
but not sure I should try. I am sort of a beginner on some things. Thanks for
all your suggestions. Also on add/remove page it is listed as 190.00MB

One goes to the MS Office site and looks at the comparison of the various
editions of Office. One then examines the components in their edition and makes
a judgement based on the correspondence between the two.
HINT: If it has Publisher and Access, it's Pro.

Do you realize that there are multiple versions of Office 2000 Pro? Box,
OEM, Upgrade, SR1 just to name a few. If "One" puts a cd in the drive, to add
a feature, and it is different than the original installation then, it will
not work and give you an error that the data1.msi file cannot be found.

What I need to know is. Let us suppose that I have multiple versions of
Office 2000 Pro installed on serveral (hundereds) of workstations. How can I
determine the "CD" installed version of Office 2000 Pro without using trial
and error?
