Hello everyone,

I have noticed in a few threads this reoccurring discussion but no topic to address the issue and only the issue.

I am a graduate Student. What version should I buy? What is the automation support anyways? Obviously exchange is not an issue when not in a corporate setting, but it the automation worth it?

Hello everyone,

I have noticed in a few threads this reoccurring discussion but no topic
to address the issue and only the issue.

automation support anyways? Obviously exchange is not an issue when not
in a corporate setting, but it the automation worth it?

Hi Joe!

You'll need to answer that question for yourself. If you've never
experimented with Automator then check it out for about 15 minutes. It's
in the Applications folder.

Notice that you can basically create workflows (a group of actions that
quickly run one-after-another) to automate things you do on your
computer. Then apply what you're seeing to what you can do with Office
products. Actions for Entourage include composing messages, sending
messages, etc.; Word would include opening, creating documents; Excel
would include importing and sorting text; and PowerPoint would include
setting up presentations and saving slides. Altogether, Office 2008 has
over 100 actions.

What's nice about workflows is that you can combine actions from
different applications. You can have the Finder take a folder of images,
place them into a pre-formatted PowerPoint template on different slides,
save as a PDF to your Desktop, mail the PDF to a a group of people
using Entourage and flag your message as a To Do for follow up later.

That's a rosy picture that will require you to become familiar with
Automator and its capabilities. Setting up a good workflow takes time
and experimentation.

If you don't have a need for automated workflows and Exchange support
then Home & Student is for you.

Hope this helps!

Additional to Jim's sage advice, you also have to consider whether you
intend to use the software to make money. If you do, I believe it's a
violation of the H/S EULA just as it is in previous education editions.
