What would cause a printed page to be different than what is on the screen?

Here are the facts

- We are running Word-2000 on 2000 with all major service packs installed.

- We have defined a number of Excel links in a document. We manually update the links (Edit|Links| Select All-Update) and have other link options turned off such as

Tools|Options|Print|Update Links
Tools|Options|Update automatic links at Ope

- Background printing is turned on (Tools|Options|Print|Background printing). We are now experiencing a problem where the printed page is different than what is showing on the screen.

What would cause this?
