What would cause the ISAM Unformatted error to come up in Excel?

A colleague of mine has an issue...she got an ISAM unformatted error message
after attempting a mail-merge with data residing in Excel. The field names
were in Row 1 (fields row) and records appear below the fields row. Before
the actual mail-merge, she was attempting to use the AutoFilter Feature based
upon applicants in a certain zip code. She was able to complete the filter
on the data, but when she tried to complete the mail-merge, this error came
up. Does anyone have any help to give on this issue? Is there a file
missing from the installation of Excel? Can you filter information before a
mail-merge?
