There aren't many people around who know both systems well as usually people
stay with one or the other, given the learning curve. Most obvious
difference is that Project is far more popular and I think cheaper. There
are things each can do that the other can't. So if you need other
organisations to use your schedules, or you need schedules from others, they
are far more likely to have or know Project.

Learning is usually easier with Project as it is an office product and any
command or option that is the same as Excel's is done in exactly the same
way, same command etc. So if you know Excel you already have a head start
with project.

Focus first on what your scheduling and communication needs are then decide
on which product.

Some of these links are old, but they are a good read. It appears there is
support in both camps and plenty of hate and misinformation floating around:

http://www.eng-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=19393
http://www.tech-archive.net/pdf/Archive/Project/microsoft.public.project/2004-04/0791.pdf
http://www.mcse.ms/archive/index.php/f-184.html

The experience I've heard is that basically what was said in the othe post.
Project is probably more widely available and in the long run cheaper as a
desktop application. Throwing Project Server into the mix complicates the
price point.

My personal opinion is that MS Project is very good at what it does. There
is always room for improvement, and that is why all products march forward
with new features and versions. Microsoft has a 30 day trial, no risk. I am
sure competitors have similar offers.
