what's the usage of estimate duration

In project plan, I can found some task setting with "estimate"( for example: duration is 27 day?). when I ajust the duration manually, the duration will be removed "estimate" sign automatically ( for example, duration is 25 day)
what the difference during estimated task and non-estimated task? what's the usage of "estimate"? any body can bring me out? thanks in advance :)

Hi Miao,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

When you are faced with such a question, it is much quicker for you to
search through the Project Help file than to post here hoping to get an
answer. It took me less than a minute to open Help, search for "estimate"
and get this response:
An estimated duration is a current best guess at how long you believe a task
will take to complete. When a duration is flagged as an estimate by using
the question mark, this indicates there is still information pending,
usually from the resources who will be responsible for the task. The
uncertainty in an estimated duration contributes to the uncertainty in the
project end date, which means that the end date might be at risk. You can
view all tasks with estimated durations. You can then determine which
estimates are still accurate and which should be updated.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :))

There is no difference except 2d? is means that the 2d is an estimate and
not yet confirmed. 2d is confirmed as a best prediction. There is a filter
for all tasks with estimated durations.
