What's this symbol?

In a file I got from elsewhere (can't ask the author), there are gray
colored symbols in the left margin that look like a capital "I" or a
vertical I-beam, a little bigger than the text (could almost be like a
bracket). I can't select them, can't find anything in Help.

What are these?

TIA,

Take a look at Outlining in help (there's a picture there).

If it looks like that, you should be able to click on the numbers at the top of
those symbols to hide/show rows.

If you click on the +'s, it'll expand that branch and the -'s will contract that
branch.

You can add these via Data|Group and Outline|Group (after you select your rows).

You can see the same kind of thing via Data|subtotals.

Maybe leftovers from a "Subtotal" procedure............pick on a column of
numbers and do Data > Subtotals > and when the pop-up window appears, select
"Remove all".........(assuming you have a backup copy of the file of
course)........

Thanks David, Dave, Chuck. Turns out the symbol was for a bookmark in
Word. But I followed the links and learned something about Subtotals
while I was at it.
