When excel start up it loads many extraneous files

After reinstalling Office 2008 i noticed that when excel was started it attempted to load Word, PowerPoint and many other files. How can I clear up this problem?

Clear the "At startup, open all files in:" input box in
Preferences/General.

I may be dense but on Preferences I did not see such an entry.

Since you replied to your original post, I can't tell what "such an
entry" means (most people answering questions use a newsreader or
Entourage, not a web interface), but I suspect the advice was to clear
the "At startup, open all files in:" input box in the General pane of XL
preferences.
