When I add a watermark in Word it changes the original layout

When I add a watermark to my original document, it changes the original
layout. It doesn't necessarily change the margins in page setup but it does
push some of the information down that will now make it 2 pages instead of 1.

Assuming you have Word 2002 or 2003:
1. Open the document that has this problem.
2. Click on View | Header and Footer.
3. Right-click on the watermark, and left-click on Format WordArt |
Layout tab | Wrapping style: Behind text | OK.
4. Click on the Close button on the Header and Footer toolbar.
