When I click "View Table Gridlines," something strange happens

When I click "View Table Gridlines," all I see are boxes encasing every single character. I cannot see where the table begins or ends. Why is this happening and how can I make it go back to viewing table gridlines in the normal way?

Is this material copied from the Web? Such material often uses nested
tables, though I've never heard of anything quite this drastic.
