When I enter a formula, excell interprets it as text

How do I turn on or off the evaluating function of the program? when I type
in a cell =5+2 the cell displays this expresion. when I try to evaluate it,
it sees is as
= =5+2.

Your cell was formatted as text before you entered the formula. Format as
General and re-enter the formula (F2, ENTER)
