When I hit the space bar it erases the next letter

You pressed the Insert button, which switches between insert mode and
overtype mode.

Press the Insert button once more to switch back.

Sounds as if you are in Overtype mode instead of Insert mode.
Double-click the OVR button in the status bar (the bottom of the window) or
press the Insert key on the keyboard once (the OVR button in the status bar
is dimmed when you are in Insert mode).
