When I open Excel 2003, I get the error that Personal.xls is locked for
editing. I can click cancel and Excel opens ok.

Hi,
Try this

ctrl+Alt+del
if MDM is in the task manger then end task.

Got to the directX dialog (Program Files > DirectX > setup
[shortcut]
Click more Info button, Tools > System file uncheck MDM so
it does not load.

It might work but since I have done it, I no longer get
that problem. MDM is Microsoft Debug Manager.
