when i press the backspace key it doesnt delete the thing i want

when i highlight some text, and then press the backspace key, or try to type
something, it used to overwrite it. now when i press the backspace key, it
only moves to the front of the higlighted object. Why?

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
