When I save a document, my computer won't recognize the file type

my computer won't recognize the office files, the icons aren't displayed as
well as it asks me to choose a program to open up the file with everytime.
This is mainly for word and excel documents. Also, it is VERY slow in
opening up those documents, I have 2 gig of RAM, should not be slow. Please
help.
