When I switch to desktop using windows/D, Outlook closes ... why?

When I switch to desktop using windows/D or from the quick launch icon,
Outlook automatically closes.
If I have a message open under Outlook this does not close.
Any ideas?

It doesn't close but minizes to the Notification Area. Right click the icon
there to disable "Hide when minized" or doubleclick it to restore the
Outlook window.
