This just started. The only change I made was that I answered "yes" when it
asked if I wanted to archive. I have never archived and want to keep all
items in my calerndar forever. Why is it now teling me I have over 2,000
additions and 5 changes to my calendar when I synchronize?. I have 2,088
calendar items on my device. I do not want 4,000 plus. They are duplicates.

What asked this?

Synching is completely up to the sync software. Outlook is a passive player
in the sync process. If your sync software doesn't recognize the
duplicates, Outlook can't change that.
