When maximizing a "minimized" document, the entire program closes.

When working in "Word" 2003, and I minimize a document to work in another
program (sometimes have more than one document minimized), then click on it
to maximize it, the entire program closes. All data entered after last
automatic "save" is lost. I have to re-open "Word" and then re-save each
document that was open at the time. This just started happening about a
month ago. What's happening?
