This may be caused by a conflict with the Norton Office Plug-in. See "OFF:
Cannot Open Office Documents or Cannot Edit Inserted Objects After You
Install Office XP Service Pack 2 or Office 2000 Service Pack 3" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328613

I

info

I am having the exact same problem and it seemed to
happen after I tried to update a Norton product. I
searched through a variety of articles within the
knowledge base, but nothing seemed to help. and Yes,
Thomas, I am working within a network environment.

Another issue that might be relevant is a conflict with the Norton Office
Plug-in. See "OFF: Cannot Open Office Documents or Cannot Edit Inserted
Objects After You Install Office XP Service Pack 2 or Office 2000 Service
Pack 3" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=328613
