when saving a Microsoft Word 97 file

Can anyone help me! When I save a file in word 97 with an
rtf extension for the first time it's fine then if I do a
fast save and quit out after I click the X to close it
hangs for about 40 sec to a minute. Its driving me crazy
does anyone have any answers.....
