When saving files I get a read only message

I recently reinstalled Win 98se and Office 97. I have two hard drives on my
computer and before installing the software I saved all My Document files to
the second hard drive.
After I had the new software on my first hard drive I copied all the files
from My Computer from the second hard drive to my first hard drive.
As an example I can open Excel files, but if I make a change and try to save
to the same file name I get an error message that the file is a "Read Only
File" and must be saved under another name. I have this same problem in
Word.
Is there any thing that I can do to keep from getting this message and be
able to save to the same file name.

Thanks,
Gordon

Maybe one of the copying techniques you used made the files read only. Right
click on the file and select properties. Check whether the read only box is
ticked.

Yes the read only box is ticked. Should anything else be ticked? Is there a
way to change all the files at one time?

Thanks,

You can select them all and change them in one go. Either select the first
and then Ctrl and click the others one at a time, or, if they are all in the
list together, you can click the first and just Shift click the last.

Andy.
