When screen saver comes on, Outlook can't get e-mail

I have thoroughly reasearched this problem and found that Outlook can connect
and receive e-mail just fine, from two accounts, provided that the screen
saver is disabled. As soon as the screen saver comes on, Outlook fails to
obtain any more e-mails because it cannot connect for some reason.
Additionally, Outlook cannot get any more e-mails after the screen is
refreshed. The only solution is to shut the program down and restart it. Is
this normal?? The program is Outlook 2002.
