[Outook 2003 client connecting remotely]

I have outlook 2003 part of office 2003 professional. OS xp pro. When
remotely connecting to the exchange server, the outlook client comes up
offline, and when I try to connect it say "trying to connect but can't. When
I am in the same network as the exchange server it comes on line almost
instantly. Is there something that I have to configure download or something

What method are you using to connect to the Exchange server remotely?
VPN? RPC over HTTP? Other?

Sorry using VPN, we have a sonic firewall soho3 and I have to use there
Global VPN client..
