We had a similar situation recently for a bunch of Word documents. They
were based on a template on an old server which got finally switched
off. The template hadn't existed on that server for a long time, but it
seems that searching for a non-existing template on that server didn't
take much time, however searching for a switched-off server does take
some considerable time.

We resolved it by creating cheating entries in the networks DNS server,
pointing the name of the old server to an existing IP address. We then
opened all these documents and removed the reference to that template.

Finding these documents wasn't easy - the name of the template is stored
in Unicode in the documents; we used 4NT's FFIND which can search for
hexadecimal strings.

FWIW, the attached template name is also displayed in the File Properties
for each document.

To be more precise, in the Advanced Summary; AFAIK Explorer does not
provide columns to display any of those, and I know of no program, apart
from Microsoft Word itself, to display them.

You can see the attached template in Tools, Templates and add-ins.

But this may be a red herring. You said Word opens slowly: if you are only
opening Word to a blank document (that is you are not opening a document
from Explorer or desktop by double-clicking on it), then the problem has
nothing to do with an attached template.

So as I said at the start of this thread, look at your printer driver and
normal.dot as the main suspects - though it could be any number of
incompatible add-ins.

See the following document for more troubleshooting tips on this:

I was referring to the Properties dialog in Word, in which it is on the
General tab.
