when text is highlighted and backspace button is pressed nothing .

When i highlight text in a word document and press the 'backspace' button or
type some more text the original text is not deleted. If i press the 'delete'
button the text is deleted though. Can someone please tell me how to fix this
problem. I don't have this problem in notepad or explorer! Thanks
