When text is highlighted the backspace key won't erase it text

When text is highlighed in word, the backspace key won't erase the text, it
just moves to the beginning of the line. The backspace key works as it
should in all other programs in the same situation. I am not sure if I am
using office XP or the one right before it, but it came installed on my
laptop, and it is 15 months old.

Any feedback would be appreciated

Tools, Options, Edit tab and check Typing Replaces Selection.
