When using Insert, Object in Otlk 2003 Icon doesn't appear

When I try to insert an object into email, it appears to create the link,
but not the icon for it. If you go into the body of your email and do insert
object, create from file, find the document, select the choice of checking
link, then check display as icon. It shoudl be showing the word icon. The
file name shows but no icon.
I am using Windows XP and Outlook 2003.
