By "writing" do you mean handwriting via a TabletPC system, or typing?

I can't answer the former, but the latter might be due to:

- the Insert key being toggled, switching you to
overwrite mode instead
- a glitch in the mouse driver that causes errant cursor
movement
- a similiar hardware-related glitch on touchpad-equipped
laptops that sometimes causes errant cursor movement,
=including= CLICKS that change the location where you're
typing.

The latter of these is inherent in some laptops due to the design of the
case. If some pressure is applied to the wrist-rest area on either side
of the touchpad itself, it can sometimes cause the mouse to track
elsewhere, AND click at that location, which means you're now TYPING at
that location. I've also had it do stuff in extreme cases like select a
bunch of text, the next keystroke after which causes the selected text
to go bye-bye.
