Whenever I close a document, Word crashes.

Like the title says. I'm running Office 2004 on an iBook, G3 800mHz.
Didn't have this problem at all until last week. I've tried
uninstalling and re-installing Office to no luck.

Any suggestions?

Andy.

Test it in a new user account?

Usually consistent and reproducible crashes respond to one of the standard
troubleshooting tips listed here--work your way through them.

http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

If you didn't uninstall by running the Remove Office tool, it doesn't fix
anything.

Wow, that's a heck of a link. I'm starting to go through it.

I tested it when logged in as a different user. When I uninstalled
Office, I did run "Remove Office," but the Office folder was still
there, so I dragged it to the trash. I assume that's how it's supposed
to work.

I also repaired disk permissions, but I didn't have a boot disc on hand
so I just ran it normally.

Another strange note: I created a new file, typed a couple lines, saved
it to my desktop. Then I closed it, and Word crashed. When I restarted
Word and opened the file, it informed me that my file had macros in it.
Er?? I didn't create any macros...

Thanks for your help,
Andy.

And did it work, or no?

I'd start by testing your Normal template. You'll see a link for it.

I don't think so....

If the Office folder was still there after a removal using "Remove Office",
then the procedure didn't work for some reason. I think you need to do the
removal and reinstall again. Be sure to repair permissions after the
removal and after the reinstall (including any updaters). Follow these
instructions:
<http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/RemoveReinstall.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser.)

Yes, it did work when I logged in as another user.

I haven't tried uninstalling it again, yet. I'l do that tonight.

Generally, if it worked in another user account, then you probably don't
need to remove and reinstall. You can either just move everything to that
user account, or one of steps listed at the link for the Troubleshooting
Index that I first gave you should work.

Beth suggested Remove and Reinstall because who knows what an incomplete
removal may have done to the setup.

Okay. So Remove Office still isn't working. It just deletes the
preferences and leaves everything as is.

So I just tried removing office, it left the folder there. I didn't
touch it. Then I booted from a CD, repaired the disk permissions.
Restarted.

Then I opened up Word, opened up a file. Closed the file. It didn't
crash, but it gave me the error "Word could not fire event." It had
done this before, but I hadn't taken note.

Any more ideas? Could you tell me more about testing the "normal
template."

Thanks again, everybody.
Andy.

Hi Andy,

There's no point in messing with the Normal template until you solve the
bigger problem, namely, your inability to uninstall Office. The "Word could
not fire event" error rang a bell and I found the following MS Knowledge
Base article:

<http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=272347>

It's written for Word 98 and 2001 but I have a feeling that some of it
applies to your situation. I suspect that the reason you can't get a clean
removal of Office 2004 is because you have moved Office files around so that
the Remove Office tool can't find them. Could that be the case?

I think you *must* do a clean removal and reinstall of Office. That alone
may solve your problems. If not, then you should move on to the other
possibilities mentioned in the article:

Daiya previously gave you the link for instructions on testing the Normal
template. It's here: <http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/MacWordNormal.htm>
(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another browser
for this site.)

Next, Office 2004 doesn't have a PPC Registration Database file (like Word
98 & 2001 do). However there are other preference files which replace it.
I would recommend pulling the entire Microsoft preference folder to the
desktop (quit all Office apps first) and then relaunch Word. New prefs
files will be created when you do. If that solves the problem then you know
one or more of these files was at fault. The MS prefs folder is found here:
~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/ (where ~ represents your Home folder).

Keep us posted on your progress and good luck!

Forgot to say: Don't trash the old prefs folder. You will at least want to
re-import your Custom Dictionary. It's just that pulling the entire folder
to the desktop is a quick way to check all your prefs files at once.
