Whenever I receive and e-mail OneNote installer runs

OneNote and Outlook 2003.

Whenever I receive and e-mail the OneNote installer runs. The box
says "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office OneNote
2007" and "Gathering Requirements".

Then after it is done Gathering Requirements, it says "The
configuration made to Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 will not take
effect until your computer has been restarted. Would you like to
restart now?"

If I choose yes, the problem still remains.

This is driving me crazy. Can someone tell me how to either fix this
specific problem or give me a reg hack that will cure this behavior?

Noteless in Nebraska.

An earlier user on this group had a somewhat similar issue. If you
look in the event log you should see where Windows installer (msiexec)
is trying to repair a component it thinks needing repair. Once you
know which component it is MS support should be able to give you a
work around.

Thanks for the tip... the Event Viewer is full of those errors but
none really point to anything and a google search hasn't turned up
much.

The errors are:

Event ID 11729, 11728
Product: Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 -- Configuration failed.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

ALSO:

Event ID 1025
Product: Microsoft Office OneNote 2007. The file C:\WINDOWS\winsxs
\x86_Microsoft.VC80.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.42_x-ww_0de06acd
\msvcr80.dll is being held in use by the following process Name:
msiexec , Id 456.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I cant find anything that specific enough to help me out. I tried the
Windows Install Cleanup but still no resolution.

Thanks.

The first one is just a universal msg that doesn't tell you much that
you don't already know. Somewhere right before that msg you should see
the component or feature failure from the repair.

Don't know if it's relevant, but this is just something trying to
update the C++ Runtime files and of course also failing.

I think you'll find the answer somewhere right before the first msg.

I see nothing before the generic Event ID.

Check this out:

Product: Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 -- Configuration completed
successfully. <----------------- WOW!
For more information, see Help and Support Center at

However, as I said above, after reboot it is still broken. Maybe this
latest discovery means something?

Also, the second error indicating a dll is in use by another process.
Well, the process isnt just msiexec but it fluctuates between msiexec,
iexplorer, communicator, OUTLOOK, svchost and spoolsv.

Other than that, there is nothing specific indicating what has failed
to be configured except for the actual application, OneNote. I'm
lost.

Thanks for all of your help so far.

You should not have Internet Explorer open when this runs. It shares
components with just about everything MS related.

You might have to just open a case with MS. They know their install
components much better than I.
