Where are floating menu preferences stored for Word OSX?

E

Edward Lipsett

In older versions of Word the content and position of various tear-off menus
was stored in normal (or normal.dot, in Windows).
The Normal file in OSX contains things like default document settings and
stylesheets, but does not seem to include general Word settings like these
menu tear-offs.

Does anyone know where they are?
I recently lost my set-up, and would like to back up the settings to prevent
them from getting lost again in the future... I have been backing up Normal,
but I see now that it doesn't contain all the information I needed!

Thanks.

Hello Edward,

Have a look at "What the Normal template and settings files contain" on page
57 of some notes on the way I use Word for the Mac, titled "Bend Word to
Your Will", which are available as a free download from the Word MVPs'
website (http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Bend/BendWordToYourWill.html). It was just
updated a few days ago.

A walk-through of settings choices is under "Modify these settings to get
Word to behave the way you want", starting on page 34.

[Note: "Bend Word to your will" is designed to be used electronically and
most subjects are self-contained dictionary-style entries. If you decide to
read more widely than the item I've referred to, it's important to read the
front end of the document -- especially pages 3 and 5 -- so you can select
some Word settings that will allow you to use the document effectively.]

Cheers,

* SUGGESTION -- KEEP REVISITING AFTER YOU POST: If you post a question, keep
re-visiting the newsgroup for several days after the first response comes
in. Sometimes it takes a few responses before the best or complete solution
is provided; sometimes you'll be asked for further information. Good tips
about getting the best out of posting are at
http://word.mvps.org/Mac/AccessNewsgroups.html and
http://word.mvps.org/FindHelp/Posting.htm (if you use Safari you may see a
blank page and have to hit the circular arrow icon -- "Reload the current
page" -- two or more times).

What do you mean by "various tear-off menus"? Because I would expect
that to be in Normal. Can you give an example?

Apparently these are just called "toolbars" in Word. Sorry, I have a
non-English version of Word.
The "How to Bend Word to Your Will" doc seems to agree that it is in the
Normal doc, but I tried deleting Normal and rebooting Word, and it still
showed my personal toolbar preferences...

I'll have to look through Bending more thoroughly.

Thanks.

Interesting information; I'll have to read it in depth.
Thank you!

(Although it seems to say that indeed these settings are stored in
Normal...)

Edward, I'd be grateful if you can let us know if you find anything on this
that has got out of date in "Bend Word".

Just remember, though, that at 200+ pages, "Bend Word" is a dictionary-style
reference, not a novel!

Cheers,

Okay, got it. Sorry.

By personal toolbar preferences--do you mean custom toolbars, or which
toolbars show and where they are?

By default, custom toolbars are stored in Normal. They may also be
stored in a global template (and that's actually a better idea). Read
about Global templates and the Word Startup folder in the link I gave
before. Perhaps you moved your toolbars?

Another possibility--perhaps that wasn't really the right Normal you
deleted.

Possibility 3--Japanese Word works differently. But that's a last resort. :)

The answer was there, but not explicitly.
Yes, Normal stores user-defined toolbars, but not default toolbars. If you
customize a standard toolbar, your customization is NOT stored in Normal.

As far as problems with the book itself... To be honest, I have no time to
read it unless there's a problem I need to solve. Like this one, which it
solved in about 120 s.
