Where are non-latin characters coming from?

I get e-mails rejected by recipients who do not accept non-latin characters
even though I don't use any. It happens even if I simply hit reply to
messages from them and add no text. Where are these alleged non-latin
characters coming from?
I'm using Outlook 2002.
