Where can I get help with TOC?

Laura

I would like to customize the Table of Contents, that is
change line spacing and not show page numbers for sub
headings. Is this possible?
I have Word 97 and am just getting educated to using
styles. The headings I want to show without page numbers
are all "Heading 2" style.
This is the first time I've created a Table of Contents,
though I have been using word for small documents for many
years.

Hi Laura,

Changing the line spacing is easy enough - simply select the TOC level that
you want to change and change it's style formatting.

As for the page numbers, I don't believe you can have some TOC entries with
page numbers and others without. There is a workaround, though. For the TOC
styles for which you don't want to page numbers to appear, simply format
them so that the right-aligned tab that controls the page number is off the
right-hand side of the page. Make sure they don't have dot leaders for the
tabs also.

Cheers

For a saved file with a TOC generated on another machine by another user,
while logged in as myself, I get a one-line TOC that looks like this

TABLE OF CONTENTS

{ TOC \o "1-3" \h \z \n 1-1}

If I log in as someone else, the full 32 line table of contents appears.

Amazingly, I tried to copy and paste the bracketed text above and the full
TOC appeared in this message.

Could this be a registry problem?

Yesterday, my IT professional removed and reinstalled Word (the whole suite
as well).

Under Tools and Options, in the View section, you can select to display
Field Codes (that's what it's doing). If you *uncheck* this, and than save
the document, it will display normally. You can also toggle these codes by
pressing ALT+F9.
