Where did the arrows go?

I use arrows and auto-shapes lots as I draw diagrams in word (XP). But
recently, for no reason I can fathom, some (but not all) of the drawin

commands don't work. This particularly seems to affect arrows; I ca
draw
text boxes and ovals but I can't draw either simple arrows or th
arrows in
auto-shape, although I can draw other auto-shapes such as callouts
Does
anybody know what is going on? I can copy and paste arrows from other
documents - but that is hardly a solution. Does anybody have any ideas
