where did the navigation list go

when I first got the program, I have a list of all directories on the left,
in which I could basically explore paths and subpaths of folders, to find and
place notebooks. Is that gone with some update of the program, or am I not
looking in the right place? This literally looked like a tree structure of
all folders.

Well, the notebook list was new with OneNote 2007 and was not present in
OneNote 2003.

Check Tools \ Options | "Navigation bar appears on the left" to make sure it
is enabled.

much appreciated, but I have that up. I thought I distinctly remembered a
different style of list, which was not just open notebooks, but rather a list
of a tree structure, where it looked more like the standard 'explorer' view
of folders. No?

OneNote has not implemented a "tree control".

You may have expanded the "narrow" view to wide. At the top of the list,
there is a control that looks like >> . If you click it, the view expands
horizontally and looks a little more tree like and shows notebooks and
sections instead of only notebooks.

If you are deadset on a tree control, give this a try: a powertoy in beta at
http://tabletpcstudent.wordpress.com/2007/11/04/treeview-beta/ which may or
not help you
