A friend of mine called and said that his auto name complete feature stopped
working.
After doing some research I called him and had him open his .nk2 file with
note pad and he said it was empty.

He said that he ran an archive and he thinks that is when the auto complete
stopped working. My question is. Does doing an archive in outlook blow these
files out? What else could cause these files to go away?
Thanks in advance

The feature seems to be working again.
i.e. all of the original name files are gone but the new ones that he sends
emails to come up the next time as an auto suggestion.

I guess my main question is what would clear the nk2. file.
I am thinking that it must be a virus of some kind

1) No.
2) Usually a corrupt mail profile or a corrupt nk2-file itself. Recreating
the mail profile reinstates the feature;

No virus. Nothing cleared the NK2 file. Your profile just lost its
connection to the file. Happens all the time, especially if you use add-ins
that interfere with Outlook's closing properly, like email AV scanning.
If it concerns you, start backing up the file and learning how to restore
it.

Thanks for the post but I not sure if that covers it since I looked at my
file and saw what it looked like and had him look at his and he said his was
empty.
Of course I was not there to look at it.

At any rate I suggested that he add important emails to his contact list and
that I would show him how to back up the other file the next time I see him.

He is one of those people that does stuff and has other people do stuff and
then calls me for free advise ... I am sure that you know what I mean.

Thanks for the replys everone
