Where do .DOT files come from?

What would cause Word 2007 created files to be saved with the .dat
extension?

Full story: the sender swears the file was created and saved with Word 2007.
However, when e-mailed as a Outlook attachment it arrives with the DAT
extension. Nonetheless, it can be opened with Word and appears to be fine.

Someone's over-zealous anti virus is not recognising the DOT format. Dates
are normally the result of the AV. Suggest the sender zips the file before
attaching to the email as the AV is more likely to recognise it and let it
pass through.

Its usually caused by the format (Rich Text/HTML etc) that the sender uses
in their mail application

I sorry, but I mistyped the extension I'm concerned about in the title. The
Word files are getting changed to .DAT.

I have seen .DAT files come through with .DAT files attached, IN ADDITION to
the files attached by the sender, but they are just small info files that
can be ignored. In the case in question the file attached by the sender is
itself being renamed to give it a .DAT extension. Does your explaination
speak to this situation?

Almost definitely an AV is causing this. As I suggested, try zipping a file
first and then attaching to an email. See if that resolves the issue.
