Where do macros in a document come from?

I'm getting real confused about templates and macros despite having read just
about every web page I could find on them.
When you go into Tools--Macro--Macros there is a drop-down called 'Macros
in'. Does anyone know what this setting does? One of the options is 'all
active templates and documents'. What does this mean? If I have this setting
chosen, does it pull in macros from templates other than the template the
document is attached to? Seems like that could be very dangerous. For me it
seems to be running macros I never intended this document to access.

The "Macros in" dropdown allows you to limit the macros that are shown in
the list. The list will only ever show macros that are available to the
current active document - so if you are in Document A based on Template A
you can (depending on the setting) see macros in DocumentA, TemplateA, and
any Global Templates (Normal, and any others you have) and AddIns, but you
will not be able to see macros in Document B or Template B (assuming
Document B is based on TemplateB), Document C, etc. What do see as
potentially dangerous?
