Where in widows does it remember which version of access was opened last

I have some Databases written in Access 2002 and some written in Access 97. I
don't want to convert the 97 databases to 2002 yet, (not all users have 2002).
When users with both versions open a 2002 database shortcut after using a 97
database they get an error: "Unrecognized database format". The only way
around it is to open Access then open the database from there. Where in
widows does it remember which version of access was opened last? Is there any
fix for this problem, other then opening the 2002 Access program first?

Thanks, I also found this free program at
http://www.worship.co.za/BlackandWhiteInc/AccessOpener.htm that works real
well.
There are 3rd party products that can help. Two that I'm aware of are

ACCVER v2.0 http://www.aylott.com.au/software.htm
Total Access Startup http://www.fmsinc.com/products/startup

You could also have your users use shortcuts to open mdb's where the
shortcuts explicitly point to the correct msaccess.exe file (i.e., precede
the file path in existing shortcuts with the MSAccess.exe path):

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 97\MSACCESS.EXE" "C:\Documents and
Settings\UserName\My Documents\MyAccess97Database.mdb"
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office XP\OFFICE10\MSACCESS.EXE" "C:\Documents
and Settings\UserName\My Documents\MyAccess2002Database.mdb"
