Brian --
Most people who use the RBS field think of it as displaying their company's
"org chart." For example, in the company I used to work with, the generic
version of our "org chart" would look something like this:
Corporation
Business Unit
Department
Team
Team Member
Then, to create the specific outline code in RBS field, I would enter the
corporation name at the top level, which is the Corpation level. Below the
corporation level, which is the 2nd level, I would enter the names of each
Business Unit, such as Petroleum, Crop Production, Fertilizer, etc. Below
each Business Unit, at the third level, I would enter the names of each
Department within that Business Unit, such as IT, Marketing, Production,
etc. Within each Department, at the fourth level, I would list each team.
For example, in the IT department, their might be the Network Operations
team, the Technical Training team, the E-Mail team, etc. And then beneath
each Team, at the fifth level, I would list the role of Team Member.
Once you have built the outline code structure for the RBS field, you will
need to open the Enterprise Resource Pool and temporarily insert the RBS
field. For each resource, you will need to select a value in the RBS field
which signifies their relative position in the "org chart" of the company.
The CEO of the corporation would probably reside at the Corporation level.
Senior VP's would probably be placed with their particular Business Unit.
VP's might reside at the level of their particular department. Team Leaders
of Team managers would be listed at the level of their particular team. And
grunts like you and me would be placed at the Team Member level beneath
their particular team.
In positioning each resource in their company's "org chart", Project Server
can then determine "who reports to whom" and "who manages whom" and can then
use this information to determine what resources a project manager can see,
and which projects PM's and executives can see, in both Microsoft Project
2002 and in Project Web Access.
It's all very impressive when you see it work. Your hardest job will be to
determine the RBS outline code for your company. Once you've got that,
you're well on your way. Hope this helps.
